Our AFOs are Super Cool
"I'm so excited for today," I say as we walk into the prosthetic and orthotic clinic.
Just then, the woman behind the desk calls my name.
I notice an unusual face staring back at me.
"What's a dog doing here?" I laugh.
The person next to the dog says, "She's getting a brace for her paw today. This is all very new to her."
I like telling people about my braces and showing how they work. "I was born with cerebral palsy," I explain. "I just call it CP. That means that my brain and body work in a special way. My ankles and feet need extra support. That's why I wear AFOs. That stands for ankle-foot-orthosis." |
The orthotist comes to bring us to our rooms. An orthotist is a person who designs and makes braces. The orthotist says that we can both go into a room together.
My AFOs are made out of plastic. First, I put on my socks. Then I slip each foot inside of each AFO and fasten the straps.
"See?" I say softly. "Your AFO will help you too."
The dog watches closely as I put on my AFOs.
Sniff, Sniff.
She wags her tail as the orthotist puts her AFO on too. |
"Look at us!" I say as we both smile. "Our AFOs are super cool!
