Gwynn's piece shows a person gracefully posed while admiring a butterfly. The bold pen lines are balanced by the subject's delicate positioning. The person's profile is calm and happy, almost seeming to blow a kiss to the butterfly. One outreached hand is a transradial myoelectric prosthesis with independently articulating fingers.
According to Gwynn, the theme in this piece is the relationship between prosthetic limbs and nature. Nature is represented by the butterfly. Gwynn explains that, "I don't even notice my mom's limb difference. It's very natural to me. When I meet other people with limb differences, I feel the same way. I'm very used to it." When asked what she thinks about prosthetic technology, Gwynn says, "It's cool".
Though Gwynn spent much of her childhood crafting and drawing, she is now very busy with school and only occasionally expresses herself through art. Gwynn likes to use art to "get emotions out", though it can be stressful for her. "I'm kind of a perfectionist and I want it to look right."
Gwynn demonstrates an inherent knowledge of anatomy and composition. We certainly hope that she continues to develop this amazing talent!
