Mermaid Birthday Party

Ella's piece is a delicate composition that shows a group of mermaids encircling a unicorn's birthday cake. Each mermaid is uniquely colored and some are dressed in flowing skirts. Their mermaid tails are carefully posed to create a wave effect within the mandala-like circle. This circle brings the focus to the unicorn at the center, which is skillfully drawn and sits above a rainbow colored, candle-topped cake. A bright butterfly sticker is at its center. This piece offers a sense of diversity, fun, and togetherness.
Ella would like the world to know that she was born without her right arm. When describing this piece, Ella's grandma explains that cutting paper so intricately with one hand is challenging for Ella. "I am amazed by Ella's abilities," her grandma gushes. With practice, Ella has mastered the skill. She often draws figures, cuts them out, and plays with them. The day after Ella created this piece, her grandma realized that each mermaid is drawn with a limb difference.
Soon after Ella submitted this first piece, she became even more excited about her gallery debut. It did not take long for Ella to create more artwork!

She's a patient artist who takes the time to add small details, such as her lashes, freckles, individual fingers, and the waist line of her dress. Ella seems to have a natural sense of color theory. The complementary color combination of purple and yellow is front and center in this bright, joyful piece.

In this untitled piece, Ella focuses her creativity on the character's outfit and accessories. The outfit seems to tell a story of a very interesting character. Wearing laced up slippers, an elaborately designed skirt, small hat, and hanging earrings, this character might be a performer. Perhaps this person is a dancer. Ella is able to tell us a story about this character without using words and lets us use our own imagination to answer our questions. The glitter on the skirt gives the piece an added dimension of depth and fun.
